Who We Are

About Us

I am one of a group of 6 registered midwives who work in the West Auckland area and deliver at Waitakere Hospital. We service from Titirangi and Glen Eden to Te Atatu and West Harbour, Swanson and Henderson all the way up to Helensville. We each have our own caseload of women which enables us to provide personilised and individual continuity of care for each woman, right through pregnancy, labour and delivery and postnatally for up to six weeks after your baby is born.

We get regular feedback from our women and undergo regular Midwifery Standard Reviews by the Midwifery Council of New Zealand to ensure we are providing safe quality care for you and your baby. It is important that we get this feedback from you to continue to evolve our practice to suit your needs.

My partner and back up Midwife is Sue Den Hartog from Manna Midwives. If I am unable to attend my clinic or I become ill or for some reason I am unable to attend your labour and birth, my partner Sue will attend and help you to deliver your baby. Sue has 16yrs plus experiences as a midwife and is absolutely adorable as are all the other midwives in the group. Throughout your visits with me during your pregnancy, you will get to meet with Sue many times as well as the other midwives Julie Wharton, Aileen Buhr and Dianne Squire as we all work from the same clinic rooms. You can check out their profiles on their website, Manna Midwives.

"Kia ora, and congratulations on your pregnancy. My name is Deidre (DJ) and I am married with 4 children. When I am not running the children around with their afterschool activities I am usually playing touch, squash or netball or spending time with my friends and family.

I decided to become a midwife as my husband and I have 4 children and during those pregnancy’s and births I had some incredible highs and some incredible lows but throughout all the highs and lows, I had some pretty amazing midwives that inspired me to use my experiences to help and empower women and their whanau to make their experience as close to their expectations as possible.

As a midwife it is my job to walk beside you through this journey, making a care plan that suits your needs and to ensure the safety of you and your baby. I will encourage and support you in your decisions to help lead you to a positive outcome for you and your family.

Childbirth is a natural process but as we know, at times, you or your baby may need some help along the way. I am trained to identify any extra help either of you may require, and am able to refer you to the best specialist care if need be. This of course is something that will be discussed with you as you are entitled to make informed decisions about your care to help you feel in control of your experience. I believe in woman based care so your input is paramount to enable me to make a safe care plan for your ideal pregnancy and birth.

I am happy to discuss with you your plans for your birth whether it be a vaginal birth after caesarian (VBAC), waterbirth, a drug free birth, epidural pain relief or any other cultural or religious choices you may require. I will also accompany you to theatre should you require a Caesarian Section.

Please feel free to call me with any queries you may have. Congratulations again and I look forward to talking with you."

Since then I have meet many more amazing midwives, especially those I worked closely with during my degree, and I am so inspired by them all every day.

Pregnancy and childbirth are unique experiences to the women having them and I am passionate about enhancing those experiences in any way I can and respecting each experience as unique. Being a midwife is more than just a job to me, I believe in sharing in the joy that pregnancy and childbirth bring to women and their whanau.

I enjoy working in partnership with women and the continuity of care model of midwifery is a passion of mine. I love that through this model I am able to get to know the women I am working with.
